Beatrice: Could you share a bit about your life background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

Nela Riehl: My name is Nela Riehl, and I am the female lead candidate for VOLT Germany for the upcoming European election. The chances are high for me to become a member of the European Parliament, so I encourage every European to vote! I am the mother of two boys, aged four and seven. Before my political career, I worked as a high school teacher in Germany. This is where I was born and raised, with roots in Kumasi, Ghana.

Beatrice: What is your essence, the core of who you are, and what drives you in your professional and personal life?

Nela Riehl: I’m highly driven by the will to fight for social justice, combat climate change, and create a better future for our children.

Beatrice: What does purpose mean to you, and how did you discover yours?

Nela Riehl: I think I discovered mine through my own children and also through 13 years of work with the next generation as a high school teacher. I feel deeply responsible to give my all to ensure a healthy, peaceful Planet for them.

Beatrice: How has overcoming failure and challenges helped build your resilience and dedication to your goals?

Nela Riehl: Overcoming failures is always a moment of growth, even though it hurts. If you accept the state you’re in and let go of your own expectations, there is a chance for you to see new opportunities.

Beatrice: What motivates you to continue pushing forward, even when faced with significant obstacles?

Nela Riehl: As I mentioned before, it’s always looking at my children and students. Nothing I do is for myself. If it were for myself, I would rather just sit in my garden and read books. But knowing that the next generation will be facing racism, climate change, and maybe even wars won’t let me stand still.

Beatrice: Why is it crucial to stay true to your values and beliefs in both your personal and professional life?

Nela Riehl: Accepting that staying true doesn’t always mean being right but accepting that you’re actually vulnerable. As I mentioned before, overcoming failures is crucial, and being willing to learn is essential.

Beatrice: How do you prioritize continuous learning and self-improvement in your life?

Nela Riehl: By being open to discussions on various topics. There are so many wise people I can learn from.

Beatrice: In what ways does practicing gratitude influence your perspective and actions, and how does it inspire others?

Nela Riehl: I believe gratitude is a key factor in my success. As I said, I’m not doing this for myself. But I am very thankful that I have the possibilities—financially, which I’ve been working hard for; healthily; and family-wise—so it’s my responsibility to actually accomplish something.

Beatrice: What core values or principles hold your life together and guide your decisions and actions?

Nela Riehl: I truly believe in equality, in good hearts, and in love.

Beatrice: What would you like to be remembered for?

Nela Riehl:  Well, that’s a tough one. Maybe for having an impact on a brighter future for our children—a future full of peace, hope, and freedom.
